10 Things I Hate About You popped up on TV this afternoon and I couldn’t help but be reminded of how thoroughly entertaining decent teen movies can be.
Released way back in 1999 this was the film that gave us Heath Ledger and Julia Styles and, of course, brought a very young Joseph Gordon Levitt out from behind that Third Rock from The Sun. 14 years later its charm still endures. Here are 10 reasons why we still love it:
1. The Premise
Following the footsteps of teen classics such as Clueless, Ten Things I Hate About You serves as a modern day re-telling of a classic tale. Shakespeare’s The Taming of The Shrew gets the 90s treatment, and my do they do an excellent job. Kat Stratford is the infamous Katherina, whom the rather crafty Petruchio (Patrick) sets out in pursuit of. It’s up to Petruchio to ‘tame’ his would-be bride, and he certainly has a fair few tricks up his sleeve. There’s also a bit of a subplot, which features a bit of a battle between the suitors of Katherina’s more desirable sister, Bianca. Enter Joey Donner and Cameron. Badda bing badda boom.
2. The Soundtrack
Take a trip down memory lane with the likes of Letters to Cleo, Semisonic, Save Ferris, The Cardigans and Joan Armatrading. Before big ballads were the staple of any teen franchise, this was the way things were done, ie PROPERLY.
3. The Cast
The young Heath Ledger, Julia Styles, Joseph Gordon Levitt, David Krumholtz (yeah, it’s yer man from Serenity, Numbers, The Newsroom and The Santa Clause), Larisa Oleynik (Alex Mack), Andrew Keegan and Gabrielle Union (Bring It On’s Isis) are fantastic, and backed up beautifully by the utterly hilarious Larry Miller, Allison Janney and of course, Daryl Mitchell.
4. Bianca and Cameron
You know you wanted them to get together from the very beginning.
5. Ms Perky’s Pulsating Prose
Long before 50 Shades, this guidance counsellor was putting errr, pen to paper with some of the most amusing erotic literature. Anastasia Steele eat your heart out, this lady knows more than you ever will.
6. The Classic Quotes
We could list them but there are just so many. Here’s a taster:
7. The Sexual Tension
Throw that copy of Twilight out the window and turn on your television. Kat and Patrick’s love/hate relationship is infinitely more enjoyable than any bog standard ‘I can’t live without this lad in my life’ tripe. Sure who doesn’t love a good old will they/won’t they challenge, eh?
8. Mr Stratford
Best. Dad. EVER.
9. Heath Ledger’s Big Band Number
Yes Heath, it is QUITE all right. Such a pity he’s no longer with us.
10. The Poem
I didn’t tear up. Not even a little. Not even at all.
Joey Donner – the ridiculously thick bad boy you loved to hate.
