Ex-Westlife star Nicky Byrne will do his TV bit on Eurovision and The Hit

Move over Laura Whitmore, there’s a new TV face in town, and sure isn’t he flying without wings at this stage? Yes, Nicky Byrne‘s set to dominate the tellybox when he takes over as the new host of RTE’s The Hit.

Nicky revealed the big news while speaking with Ryan Tubridy on The Late Late Show earlier this evening. It seems that the former Westlife star really has been bitten by the TV bug: Sure didn’t he shake it up on Strictly Come Dancing and do a fine job hosting Football’s Next Star? Presenting the new series should prove an absolute breeze after that, right? If he survived an audition for The Den back in the day, he can survive anything.

Last time we saw The Hit it was little more than a TV pilot, but RTE were so happy with the response the show got that they decided to make a full series. They’ve already got legendary music producer Steve Lillywhite (who has worked with the likes of U2, The Killers, Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, Morrissey, The Pogues and Peter Gabriel) on board, so it looks as though they’re pulling out all the stops this time around.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the format, here’s all you need to know: Two hopefuls showcase their songs to two established music stars with the hope that they will pick their song. The stars then battle against one another and are under pressure to select one song they can turn into a hit. Simples.

Speaking of massive ‘choons’, Nicky’s also getting involved with tomorrow night’s Eurovision Song Contest. Last year Grainne Seoige and the gang had a few technical difficulties while trying to transmit the results of the Irish televote to Baku, so here’s hoping Mr Byrne has better luck when Malmo hears Dublin calling tomorrow night. All he has to do now is figure out what to wear…
